Thoughts on the Movie Obsession

Warning: Lots of Spoilers
This might be a niche example, but have you ever seen those Youtube videos, and they’re titled something like “MANIFEST YOUR SPECIFIC PERSON ✨ FAST ✨ ✨ ACTUALLY WORKS ✨ MEDITATION ✨ ANCIENT FREQUENCIES ✨ 333 ✨ 222 ✨ ?” The comments will be filled with desperate people: “i hope this works” and success stories (or internet fibbers) - “this worked!” Since maturing past the age of 14, I’ve found these videos strange. Trying to force someone in your life through magic tricks can’t be a good idea - you’re trying to remove their autonomy through Youtube videos. If it worked, would the result truly be what you want?
This is the basis of the movie Obsession, in which “protagonist” (if you call him that) Baron “Bear” Bailey makes a wish with a strange toy for his crush (Nicki) to love him “more than anything in the world.” It goes as well as you would expect.
Bear is the type of man that I dislike (or even hate). He’s incredibly weak, unable to take hold of his own life and make decisions, incel-adjacent, and ultimately, extremely predatory. After he makes his wish, he sees Nicki’s behavior do a complete 180°. His attempts to show concern to Nicki, to Nicki’s friends, and to himself are just ways to assuage his guilt, because he never stops having sex with her (until she smashes someone’s skull with a brick).
What’s crazy to me is that even though Bear is an annoying weirdo, he still has a girl pining over him (Terrible. The directors are inspiring LOSER men to believe they can pull HOT girls while still being LOSERS… get a JOB. GO to the GYM. Get a HOBBY, go OUTSIDE, get in the FIELD). Which brings me to Sarah, who I also disliked. I mean it’s simple, she’s a pick me. She sees Nicki essentially going through a mental breakdown, and uses it as an opportunity to get into Bear’s pants. Now I’m not saying she deserved to get her skull bashed in, but girl, what are you doing?
Then there is Ian, who is encouraging (sabotoging) Bear by giving him awful advice on flirting. He has actually been hooking up with Nicki for 2 years? On the one hand, props to him for presumbly shooting his shot, unlike the coward Bear. But also, so much for “bro code”! I think it’s funny because people would stereotype women as the male-centered backstabbers, but it’s men. Most men would throw their “bros” under the bus for a hot girl - I’ve seen it happen.
What did I think of the movie? Honestly, it grossed me out or annoyed me most of the time. I know it’s on purpose, but the characters were unlikeable. And the unneccessary twitching and jumping and odd movements of Nicki irritated me. I know it’s meant to be unnerving and show she’s not herself, but I just wanted her to stand still. The blood and the stabbings and bashing - gross. I dislike horror movies though so I was bound to have this opinion. I did like Sarah and Nicki’s outfits. Some pieces I will look for when I decide I deserve new clothes: silver necklaces, oversized jean bomber jackets, cream colored knee high-ish socks, and tall boots.
Would I recommend watching? I guess? I left the movie theatre feeling kind of meh. I understand the message and all, but I didn’t feel excited. It was entertaining enough, and perhaps you’ll enjoy it more than me.
